I ask “why” one time too many.
My design work usually starts with a question that sounds a little rude, like “Why does this exist?” or “Who decided it works this way?” Most of the time somebody did decide, years ago, and nobody has asked about it since.
I got into design because I couldn’t stop noticing things: the button people tap twice because they aren’t sure it worked, or the form field everyone skips. Small moments like that tell you more about a product than any presentation does.
My work starts with listening. I ask a lot of questions, some of which sound obvious, because the answers people think are too obvious to mention are usually where the real problem is. Most products make sense to whoever built them. My job is to make them make sense to the users!
