Blending Productivity and Mindfulness in XR
Role: Spatial Interaction Designer
Timeline: 1 Month
Tools: Bezi 3D, Figma, Blockade Labs
Skills: Spatial Design, Prototyping, Image Wrapping, VR/AR Interface Design
As a Spatial Interaction Designer, I conceptualized and prototyped My Space XR, a customizable virtual workspace designed to seamlessly integrate work, relaxation, and mindfulness in a single XR environment. The solution allows users to toggle between VR and AR, leveraging immersive spatial design to enhance productivity and relaxation. This project helped me explore XR design fundamentals while addressing user needs for personalization and simplicity in virtual environments.

Process
The Challenge
In a hybrid work era, XR offers a unique opportunity to create dynamic, immersive workspaces. The challenge was to design an extended reality workspace that:
1. Supports user transitions between work, play, and relaxation.
2. Offers customizable widgets tailored to diverse tasks.
3. Provides a streamlined, ergonomic interface for extended usage in VR and AR environments.
The goal was to reimagine the way users interact with digital tools in an immersive space, balancing productivity with mindfulness.
The Audience
Primary Users:
1. Remote Professionals: Seeking focused yet flexible virtual workspaces.
2. Tech Enthusiasts: Interested in exploring innovative XR setups for daily tasks.
3. Mindfulness Advocates: Using technology to blend productivity with relaxation.
Understanding these groups’ expectations helped shape a user-friendly, adaptive virtual environment that aligns with their varied needs.
The Process
Research & Understanding XR Principles
Key insights were gathered through observational studies and XR design exploration:
• Users prioritize efficiency and ergonomics in virtual setups.
• Personalization features (like custom environments) enhance user satisfaction.
• Seamless navigation between work and relaxation modes is crucial for engagement.
These insights informed the decision to use skyboxes for VR environments and a central-view interface optimized for user comfort.
Designing the Experience
Widgets and Interface:
Using Figma, I designed 2D widgets for work (e.g., meeting schedules), media (e.g., Spotify playlists), and mindfulness (e.g., guided meditations). The widgets were arranged within the user’s attention zone for ergonomic interaction.
3D Environment Setup:
Prototyping in Bezi 3D involved:
• Asset Placement: Setting up virtual objects in a central view.
• Skybox Design: Creating diverse, immersive backgrounds for VR environments.
• Camera Calibration: Ensuring focal length flexibility (focused, relaxed, wide-angle views).
Prototyping & Refinement
The prototype was tested for:
• Attention Area Design: Ensuring key elements were within the user’s eye comfort zone (30° vertical and horizontal viewing angles).
• Widget Responsiveness: Maintaining clarity and ease of navigation during use.
• Customizability: Allowing users to toggle between VR and AR views effortlessly.
These iterations ensured the interface remained intuitive and visually appealing.

Outcome
My Space XR successfully redefined virtual workspaces by balancing productivity and relaxation in a unified XR experience.
Key Results:
• Enhanced Productivity: Streamlined interfaces improved task management in immersive environments.
• Personalization: Users appreciated the ability to switch between diverse VR environments.
• Ergonomic Excellence: Placing elements in the central view ensured user comfort during prolonged use.
This project not only demonstrated the potential of XR in enhancing daily workflows but also deepened my expertise in spatial prototyping and user-centric design for immersive environments.
